Benvenuta Tiffany e grazie per aver accettato di partecipare alla nostra intervista. Raccontaci un po’ di te: chi sei, dove vivi e cosa fai al di fuori del tuo studio creativo.
Ciao! Grazie per avermi invitato a partecipare a questa intervista. Sono una scultrice di carta e abito negli Stati Uniti, più precisamene a Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Vivo con mio marito, le nostre due figlie e un gatto. Oltre a realizzare creazioni con la carta e a prendermi cura della mia famiglia, mi piace fare volontariato nella scuola elementare di mia figlia, leggere ed occuparmi del giardino in estate.
Come è nata la passione per la carta?
Sono venuta a conoscenza dell’arte di creare sculture con la carta quando studiavo arte ed illustrazioni alla Virginia Commonwealth University. Ho creato il mio primo progetto dimensionale con la carta durante una lezione e da quel momento ho realizzato tutto il mio portfolio illustrativo con creazioni di carta.

Hello Tiffany, thank you very much for accepting to answer some of our questions. Please, tell us who you are, what you do beyond the paper world and where do you live.
Hi! Thank you so much for inviting me to answer your questions. I am a paper sculpture artist living in the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania area, in the USA. I live with my husband, two daughters, and our cat. Besides creating paper art and taking care of my family, I like to volunteer at my daughter’s elementary school, read, and do a little gardening in the summertime.
How was the passion for paper projects born?
I learned about the art of paper sculpture while I was studying art and illustration at Virginia Commonwealth University. I created my first dimensional paper project in one of my classes, and from there I ended up creating my entire illustration portfolio with paper art.
Quante ore al giorno dedichi alla creatività? Hai altri hobby al di fuori del mondo creativo?
Anche se i miei programmi variano spesso, in una settimana cerco di passare tra le 15 e le 20 ore nel mio studio. La maggior parte dei miei hobby tendono ad essere creativi. Mi piace creare insieme ai miei bambini, leggere e lavorare in giardino. Amo anche camminare e fare yoga.
Quando e come hai iniziato a replicare gli organi in carta?
Il mio primo progetto di anatomia è stato un cuore umano di carta che ho realizzato alla scuola d’arte intorno al 1999/2000. Poi ho deciso di creare una serie botanica con ossa, organi, fiori e felci, poiché ero stata ispirata dal potere che possiede madre natura. Ho iniziato questa serie nel 2018 e ci lavoro tutt’oggi.
How many hours do you spend for creativity? Do you have any other non-creative hobbies?
My schedule varies, but on a good week I try to spend 15 – 20 hours a week in my studio. Most of my hobbies are creative in some way. I like to make crafts with my children, read, and work in the garden. I also enjoy yoga and walking.
When and how did you start to create paper human organs?
My first anatomical project was a paper human heart that I created in art school. That was around 1999/2000. Then, I was inspired to create a new botanical series with bones, organs, flowers, and ferns. This series is inspired by the power of Mother Nature. I began this series in 2018 and am still continuing with this work today.

Si, studiare libri e disegni di anatomia è davvero importante per creare questi lavori.
Hai un cutter preferito e che pensi sia perfetto?
Mi piace usare il k26 fit grip knife e la lama numero 11 di Excel Blades. Ha un manico confortevole ed ergonomico.
Hai dei suggerimenti da darci per il taglio con cutter a mano?
Aiuta molto girare la carta durante il taglio piuttosto che girare il polso. In questo modo il taglio sarà più facile. Assicuratevi di cambiare le lame smussate mentre lavorate. Aiuta anche avere un tappetino da taglio su cui lavorare. Pratica e pazienza sono essenziali.
Did you study on anatomy textbooks to create so detailed works?
Yes, studying anatomy books and anatomical drawings is very important to create these works.
Do you have a favourite craft knife that you love?
I like to use the k26 fit grip knife and #11 blades by Excel Blades. It has a comfortable, ergonomic handle.
Would you like to share any advice or tips about cutting with craft knives with us?
It is helpful to turn the paper that you are cutting, rather than turning your wrist. This allows for smoother cuts. Make sure to replace dull blades as you are working. Also, it helps to have a self-healing cutting mat to work on. Patience and lots of practice are important.
C’è un progetto che ti è piaciuto più di tutti realizzare?
Le amo tutte! La parte pratica del lavoro è quella che preferisco. Ad oggi il momento migliore è il “Respiro profondo”.
Al contrario, ce n’è uno che ti ha creato molte difficoltà e che non rifaresti?
Se penso al passato ci sono certamente dei progetti da migliorare ma che ho comunque adorato. Ogni creazione artistica è un’esperienza da cui imparare.
Ci sono dei creativi che ammiri e che segui sui social?
Ci sono tantissimi creativi della carta meravigliosi! Due dei miei preferiti sono Jeff Nishinaka e Yulia Brodskaya.

Do you have a creation you loved to make?
I love all of them! The actual making of the work is my favorite part of the process. Right now I’d say my favorite is “Deep Breathing.”
On the contrary, do you have one you didn’t love at all?
Looking back, there are definitely some earlier works that I could improve on. But nothing that I did not love at all. Each artwork is a learning experience.
Are there any creatives you love and follow on social media?
There are so many wonderful paper artists out there! Two of my favorites are Jeff Nishinaka and Yulia Brodskaya.
